Sonnet 169

I mourn, pen in my hand, you in my heart,
Tears in my eyes; why did you have to go
Without so much a word you wished to start
A new life on your own, and forge alone
Into that great wide empty world without me?
Not even a goodbye, or yet a sigh
Or better a why you so chose to leave
Without a sign to one who wished you nigh,
Forever; life is not fair to those who care
And give their hearts to barren love like ours;
Who grieves for those love has passed by, souls bare,
In pain beyond compare, who while the hours?
A church bell tolls… distant… for me or you,
Or someone who, providence smiled on too.
