Sonnet 654

What see you in this ragged ravaged frame
That bore the spleen life’s gauntlet set to prove
And by long love, you share my deepest stains
That God set forth here not to be removed?
What faith keeps you steadfastly by my side—
No pride of man could wield such loyal power,
For by your beauty could you else abide
Not squander here the waning of youth’s hours?
Perhaps unto yourself you are untrue
Or yet strange potion plied puts you part blind,
Or some spell cast bade lowly servitude
That you stay helot to my dwindling time.
By love’s great grace I here now set you free,
That you yet thrive beyond this curse and me.
